Are you looking for some light, uplifting, or easy reading? Then don't pick up this story -- and it's a short story, not a novel or novella. "ICU" is horrific -- in a good way -- and it's supposed to be. It's not for everyone, I am sure. It's horror, not supernatural horror or monster horror. It's human horror, all about the horrors humans inflict on each other. And it's very good.There are some technical writing-related problems, but they won't detract from your enjoyment of the story, assuming you like horror. I never discuss plots or give anything that could be considered a spoiler, and I'm not going to start now. :)
Because I don't discuss plots or spoilers, it's not easy to discuss this short story without spoiling it. I'll just say it's a twisted tale of human evil, pure human and pure evil. If that's to your taste, you might like this story as much as I did.

This was just a short story but packed a massive punch. It dragged me in from the first page and was unrelenting. The characters were amazingly colourful and believable. I couldn't tell where this story was going. The ending was totally unexpected and very, very clever. It's one of those stories that make you reread the whole thing just to find anything you missed the first time around. Fantastic!
I read this short story as part of the short story collection in Nightsound. It is a disturbing story about a serial killer and an abusive hospital attendant. I had to put it down a few times due to the nature and descriptive writing of the scenes which gave me nightmares! You know a story is a good one when it stays with you even after the last page is turned and yes...this one is still in the back of my mind! Kudos Mr. McKinney for writing such a great story that is keeping me awake at night listening for the things that go bump in the night!
You cannot go wrong reading any of Mr McKinneys books. He has a mind that is just so screwed its amazing!
The work is always squeaky clean, therefore easy to read.
But dont let that fool you, the stories are complex, deep and disturbing.
Its hard to write this review without giving anything away as the action starts straight off with some terror, abduction, torture and various other twisted things.
As the story develops so do the characters and how do you pick who to route for....eeek, Mr McKinney is very good at creating people that you love to hate, fear and generally want to cringe and hide from.
Another great story!! buy it and starting to twitch!
I have been reading books and all types of printed matter since I was a first-grader in 1940, and I can say unequivocally
that this is the worst piece of trash ever. I would also suggest that for those who think that this story is great, be sure to take your medicine and call your doctor in the morning.
This is a short story but let me tell you it is in no way short on horror or suspense. This is one of those stories that I really got mad reading and wanted to throw it across the room but couldn't because I wanted to finish reading it. Along with anger (which I had a lot of) there is also fear, regret and need that leaks from the pages and into your mind to live.
Great read, great price, check it out and enjoy. Highly recommended!
As I read a lot, I mean a lot of books I found myself getting a bit board so I thought I would try something different. This book was indeed different. The story line was okay and the ending was unexpected.
Jerry McKinney has a way of writing that pulls you into the story in the first few sentences and never lets you go! His stories are chilling. His characters are very well written and his plot is well delivered. This was a short story and I would like to see what he could do if it where longer! A truly great horror writer!
